What did you WANT and what did you GET

Just sitting here thinking of my perfect little Max and wondering about ya'lls story. A little over a year ago I started just THINKING only about getting another dog after my pup of 16 years, Zaya, had been gone for quite some time. Did I REALLY want to put myself through that pain again? Then I found this unrecognized breed of a dog and be darn if I can remember it now if my life depended on it, but it was a small dog and sort of known for bouncing almost rather than walking and it was so fluffy and cute and there were for sure 2 breeders in Texas but they were like $300-500 and then I kinda wondered if I wanted to do that when there are so many homeless pets, etc. but I really liked how these dogs looked and they were cute to watch on the video (Urr, why can't I remember!!! But I DO recall that they are still an unrecognized breed).  Then of course I went to get the cheap cat carrier at Citizen's For Animal Protection's Thrift Store so I could get the cat I was watching for a week (ha...NOT...and surprise...pregnant...which ended up now being Thunder Kitty, so after she gave birth, I could get her spayed once I found good homes for the babies) and that is were I saw Max for the first time, etc. Anyway, the question is this...I was NOT getting another dog at that time, nor was I certainly getting another male dog after the nightmares I endured while trying to train my other pup Zaya. Plus, remember, I wanted this cute, fluffy, bouncy dog....yea, I KNEW it would come to me..it's called a Mi-Ki (here are some pix of what a Mi-Ki looks like) What I got instead was that pull on my heart that I repeatedly tried to deny, that was Max,....the non-fluffy (and that is an understatement as he's almost hairless on his neck and tummy), male (well, without "all" the male-ness:), long, skinny-legged, non-bouncy pup with the stereo-typical potential as a Chihuahua mix to be a yappy dog (which I also didn't want)! Basically, Max was pretty much everything I thought I didn't "want" in a dog! Sooo beyond happy I listened to my heart and soul instead of the vision I had of what I "thought" I wanted! I can't imagine my life without my BFF, Max!!! He is TEN times, heck, a THOUSAND times better than any bouncy, fluffy, female dog I could ever possibly imagine and pretty much came housebroken, non of that male peeing thing was EVER a problem, he's like a miniature deer that doesn't live in the forest, never barks (and when he has, on VERY rare occasions it's a riot!), now he DOES shed EVERYWHERE and I am furever covered in his dog-hair and wear it like a badge of honor!!!! Has this happened to any of you? I'm real curious of how you all ended up with the pups you have now and did you follow through with getting what you set out to get in a pup or what? I'm personally, a big believer in you end up with what was right for you no matter what, but just really got to thinking about it and wanted to know if what you WANTED (thought you wanted maybe is a better way to put it) is what you left with? I for once, was soooo happy I was soooo wrong!!! I have never been this close to a dog in my life (yes, of course I loved my other pups in the past dearly and miss them very much, don't misunderstand that, remember I was so crushed after losing Zaya I didn't know if I ever even wanted to endure that heartache ever again!), but with Max there is just this amazingly strong connection I can't even put into word if that makes any sense?!  So how about you guys?

Life without THIS face? Are you serious? Of COURSE you left with me !!!! Duh?!
I AM the MAX of your world am I not?!!!!

Me: Of COURSE Max, I just didn't know you yet!!!

  1. I got my 1st Cardigan (way back in the 80s) purely on a lark. I was going through a rough patch, and thought a puppy would ease my troubles. I didn't even know what a Corgi was at the time, but went purely on looks/faith. Dylan turned out to be the BEST.DOG.EVER. As a result, when he passed away at nearly 17, I knew I would have to have another Cardigan....and then another ;-)

    1. Oh, I love that! So now your a dedicated Corgi girl! Ha...I never knew they were called Cardigan's...just thought they were Corgi's so there ya have it - learn something new everyday! I've only had 1 other Chi mix and that was supposed to be a foster dog, but long story short the organization never called even once to check on him and when I would call to see if they had any indoor kennels available yet they'd just tell me know and find a reason to hurry and get me off the phone! I never intended to even be a foster Mom to Roscoe but he was in the outdoor kennel and skinnier than Max and had no jacket or blanket and I knew that poor thing would die that night if he didn't get some warmth soo...had Roscoe until the very end and he was sooo sweet!

  2. Those Mi-Ki's are so adorable. Those chihuahuas are everything I didn't want in a dog too, lucky for them they have fantastic personalities to compensate for the yappiness.

    1. Boy they sure do have some personalities right?! But can't imagine life without them too! Are your pups yappers? Max hardly ever barks but is hilarious when he does or bet still if he attempts to growl - that's the best ever!!!

  3. So glad you found Max and gave him a loving home. Mi-Kis are cute, but Max is way cuter ;)

Truth be told, I didn't want Beamer. I wanted another puppy at the shelter. DK and I were going to the shelter to look at a Bernese puppy, but we slept in that morning and the Bernese pup was put on hold by someone else. He was going home in a few hours! I've been begging DK for a dog one year into our relationship. So that's two years of begging before he finally gave in! I wasn't going home empty handed that day. DK spotted Beamer (formerly named Pico) sitting quietly in the corner of his kennel and said that he looked like a great dog. I was all mopey, but gave Beamer a chance. He came to me, I asked him to sit, he sat, I asked him to give me his paw, he gave me his paw. After that meeting, we applied for Beamer right away and passed the interview! The rest is history. I saw the Bernese pup's "success story" on the shelter website, so I know he's in good hands. I sometimes wonder where Beamer's brothers and sisters are because he came with his littermates (and was the last to get adopted because he's all black). None of their new owners posted an update. I'd love to set up a play date with them....

That was a long winded story :P

    1. Oh, and Beamer's sit and shake paw performances were a fluke. He actually wasn't trained at all.

And after we got all the required puppy equipment and came back to pick him up, he showed what a wonderful pup he was by peeing on his bed.

If DK and I didn't snatch Beamer up that morning, we wouldn't have him with us today. A lot of people were looking at him and glared at us with jealous eyes when we told them he was spoken for ;)

    2. What an awesome story!!! See, I just knew there were others like me out there! ha! Aw, Beamer KNEW he had to hurry and charm you with the shaking paw thing! That's good stuff! Good thing he saved the peeing on his bed for an AFTER's trick :) :). He made it to the PERFECT Mom and DK :) I wish you could have found his litter mates - that would have been cute to see them have a family reunion!! What's Audi's story?

  4. Sometimes things just work out the way they are supposed to. You were supposed to get Max. Think of all the time you have saved brushing. :)

We wanted a hunting dog and look where that has lead us....

    1. Ha...did you think at the time you'd end up with an entire crew? They are such beautiful pups though and you seems to have gotten some great hunting dogs too...but they won me over with those faces :)
Strange thing is that I think I end up brushing Max MORE because he sheds soooo much...but that's ok with me cuz Max loves being brushed :)..a LOT! Such an attention pup!

  7. we had been dogless for less than a year when we found bailey. (we lost my precious kibbles to cancer in january and we found bailey in november of 2010). she was picked up as a stray with no id. when we brought her home she was only 3 pounds and very weak. i nurtured her back to a somewhat healthy state but we didn't know how sick she really was until we had her spayed. doc said her little uterus was so infected, it was about to explode! she must have been in so much pain, poor little baby :( after her surgery she was like a different dog. she had energy and could actually run around! (which she couldn't do before.) it was wonderful to see the real bailey emerge.
we did not go out looking for a chihuahua, but when we saw her, we knew in an instant that she was the doggie for us. i had no idea how much i needed another doggie in my life until we found her. when i lost my kibbles, my heart shattered. little by little bailey has been piecing it back together. the saying "who rescued who?" really applies to us because not only did we rescue her, she rescued me!
