Eye Licker

I know this is an odd subject, but every time Max and my beautiful Grand-Dog, Chloe (aka Beans) get together Max wants to lick Chloe's eyes. I googled this and found it could signify an eye infection for Chloe, just a weird taste thing, all sorts of explanations as to why, but wasn't any definitive answers that I could find and Max only does this with Chloe! Lucky for Max, Chloe doesn't seem to care particularly as long as you don't mess with her toys! Max is plenty entertained enough to just watch Chloe play - she's hilarious and if I had 1/16 of her energy...well, my house would sparkle! Does anyone have a pup that does this? Any ideas? Just kind of curious as Chloe does seem to be fine and like I said, Max only does that with her? What are some of your weird pup interactions?

  1. I have seen dogs try to lick other dogs' mouths before, but not eyes. Maybe a social or dominance thing?

    Nice picture. :)

    1. And it's only with her...it's so weird! We thought about the dominance thing too but Max usually doesn't seem to care about dominance but maybe because Beans (Chloe) is the smallest of his good pup buddies and thanks :)

  2. Hi Guys,

I've never wanted to lick eyes, but my buddy Cosmo from next door likes to kiss my ears when I go around in the morning!

    1. Well, there ya go...Dakota sure is a sweetie!!! I'm not gonna worry much I guess as I was hoping others would chime in like you to tell me their pups did these things too :) Thanks!

  4. Beamer licks Audi's entire face. I think Beamer's maternal instincts are kicking in. He likes to clean Audi's face when it's full of gross stuff. Maybe Max is doing the same?

And you're quite the pretty lady :)

    1. Some kind of terrier mix, wire hair, small but solid as a rock and hyper (understatement!). My daughter can say come on Beans (her nickname), and my daughter will be standing up and Beans leaps STRAIGHT up and into her arms!!! Why? Do I sense some theory maybe??? :) I'm all ears...

  6. Maybe Chloe had eye crusties and Max was just being kind enough to loosen them up for her?!?

  8. Our family dogs have done this many times without eye infections. The oldest dog who is like a mommy to the others seems to do it more (maternal instincts?).

  9. Our beagle, Bailey, used to lick my mom's beagle's eyes. It always thought it was a sign of affection/kind of a maternal thing. Of course... my mom's beagle, Sugar, always had goopy eyes, so maybe Bailey just liked the taste! (Gross, huh?)

    1. Well, think it's down to taste and maternalness here...I'm just gonna choose to go with maternal since yep, taste is kinda yucky. Then again "most of us":) don't sniff each others behinds as a greeting :)

  14. Hi Liz,

Nothing to worry about. D'Angelo does the same thing to Patti. It's a dog thing but mostly a Chihuahua thing. He does it for a number of reasons. One because he loves her so much and wants to show her affection (cleaning the eyes of another dog is a BIG sign of affection in dogs). The other reasons are...she has eye goop and he wants to clean her and the final reason (in some dogs, not D'Angelo) are to show dominance.

Chihuahuas are known to be HUGE lickers/kissers. D'Angelo and Patti (both Chihuahuas) will kiss me for hours if I let them. They will also kiss each other like that. They french kiss each other at times. It is so cute to watch because they love each other so much. That is all Patti will let him do. ;-)

I have a funny feeling that Max LOVES Chloe so much and he wants to show it. Nothing to worry about -- total sign of affection. :-)
